Athens, and then home...

Ringa Ringa - A.R. Rahman

Last Friday, I drove up to Athens straight after work, stopping only to buy Cokes and salty snacks. It was a real health kick. Was I embracing my new found porcine qualities? Oh no! It was just a last hurrah. No more soda now, but anyway. Here's what I learned during the trip: podcasts are fantastic for road trips. Anyone who listens to NPR knows that intelligent talky talky shows do it. Also good for long road hours: clever hip hop (I cannot strongly enough recommend the global mashup that is NASA - Spirit of Apollo. Holy smokes, with Chuck D, David Byrne, Kanye West, The Wu Tang Clan, MIA, Santogold, Seu Jorge, and dozens more, it's such a fun album), dancey global pop (City of God Soundtrack and Slumdog Millionaire).

Also, I learned: north Georgia roads at night are spooky for a coastal Florida driver. Hills and curves in pitch black just don't happen down here. Consequently, every driver was wishing I'd move out of their way. Sorry, Georgians!

I got to Stephen and Sabrina's at 11ish. They have a great little house. I really love the look of their place. They've got fantastic stuff on the walls, and great furniture. Like my apartment, eclecticism is the word there. Also, one can find the two best named guinea pigs I've ever met: Pony Horse and Kidney Bean. Nice.

Their friends Ashley and Carl came over, and after hanging out for a bit, we watched 9 to 5 projected on their bedroom wall. I don't think I dozed off much, even though I'd been up for what seemed like eleventeen hours.

The next morning, I went out with Stephen bleary eyed and Sabrina still asleep to do the Athens Gambler ride. It was 50km of hill country, and I loved it. If I had to put on weight during my convalescence, at least I didn't lose too much speed. I was passing people for the majority of the ride. That felt really good.

At the end of the ride, I caught a little bit of the morning amateur race before heading back...after another 4 hour sleep night, and little breakfast, I was hungry.

Back at the house, we got ready for the afternoon, and headed to a Peruvian restaurant called Las Conchitas Caliente. We all had the vegetarian Cuban sandwich. It was astounding.

We walked around a bit, talking a lot about the texts we'd received about the terrible and surprising triple murder that happened about an hour and a half before, just a mile away. While trying to find out more via text messages, S&S took me sight seeing. Of course, I was more interested in the broke down parts of Athens than anything else.

There was a day care with tremendous hand painted decorations:

Afterward, we went home and researched the shooting before heading to the races. On the way, this little guy wanted to come with us:

And this character was interested, too:

During the womens' race, we hit the crepe bar because the only way to see the race was by holding my camera above the crowd. Delicious, delicious crepes.

We ended up catching a good location for the last 25 laps of the mens' race, and man, were those guys blowing by at breakneck pace. It was pretty awesome.
I have no idea who won because I couldn't see the finish line, and I couldn't hear the announcer, but it was just exciting to see it all up close and not chock full of commercials on Versus.

I also got to talk to a rep for Storck, makers of the 10 pound bike, and sponsors of Team Vanderkitten. Their bikes are sick. It was pure lust looking in the back of the van. (Hmmm...maybe there's a reason they chose to sponsor Vanderkitten).

The rest of the night included me being a party pooper about music and bars because I was DEAD tired, and also some great jump photos before I died on the pull out bed.

I'll update all about the drive home tomorrow (or Thursday?), but I've got another post to dump on you tonight, so...for now, I think you're neat, and sweet dreams.
